FASHION OF THE
1970's
The 1970's was the start of a disco era. Disco was not just
a type of music or dancing, it was a way of life. The youths of this time
reflected the disco clothing and style. Hairstyles were long and free-flowing or afros during this time. In order to fit in with the disco scene
you had to be decked out in a tight pair of polyester bell bottoms, a bright
floral bodyshirt with a butterfly collar, and a nice pair of six inch platform
shoes. The colors used on the clothing were loud and clashing, and swirling
psychedelic or flowers were the most popular prints. Along with disco fashion
came synthetic fabric such as nylon, acrylic, and polyester. The seventies began
its decade with a trend in hippie clothing before it moved on to the disco
clothes. The clothing worn at the beginning of the 70's was much the same as the
disco attire except for the material used on the clothes. The hippie clothing
tended to use natural fibers to achieve the organic flower child look. Also
drug-related prints, such as mushrooms and poppies, were more popular during the
beginning of the seventies with the hippie look. The hippies put a lot of effort
into making their jeans extraordinary, they embroidered designs on them and
intentionally made them ragged and shabby. Hot pants, which were short shorts
worn with high boots, made their debut at the beginning of the 70's. Unisex
clothing became really popular during the seventies; it was totally cool for a
girl to be dressed like her boyfriend.
